Sept 13, 2007 (Thursday) Inverness-ObanWe liked riding on the trains (had space left on our train pass) so took train instead of bus, although it was quite a long trip involving 4 different trains. We went to Perth then transferred to train to Glasgow and a smaller train to Oban. It was enjoyable watching the terrain change. It was sunny when we left and there were hills and trees then farms and then mountains with lots of water, looked like North Vancouver.
When we got on the train to Oban we were sitting with 2 seats on each side of a table with a mother and her daughter. Across from us at another set of seats with a table a man and 2 women sat down and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and coke and started drinking. They were from New Zealand originally but had been working in England for a year and were going to a wedding. They were very friendly and laughing and having a great time. The man for some reason had left with no luggage and had stopped at a drug store and bought some toiletries. When they finished the first bottle of whiskey they pulled out another one and kept on partying. When they finished that one they brought out a bottle of vodka and asked us to join them. They were so friendly we took a drink and then they insisted we have another until we were all having a laughing and having a great time. It made a very fun part of the trip (annoying for the other passengers with all the noise, but fun for us).

We took a taxi to Raniven Guest House, where we had a very small room. You are supposed to have haggis in Scotland so Ches had chicken stuffed haggis for supper and enjoyed it, I had steak and ale pie.

Sept 14, 2007 (Friday) Oban
It rained at night and had showers in the morning, afternoon was sunny, then cloudy again in evening. We went for a walk into town and had hot chocolate and some chocolates at a shop that makes chocolates and it was very good. As we were looking at the shops it started to pour rain so we went into one shop and when we came out a few minutes later the sun was out. I had a shrimp sandwich and Ches had salmon at the dock and then took the ferry to the island of Mull. It is a 45 scenic ferry ride, especially passing Castle Duvet. Since there is nothing within walking distance of the ferry and it was too late for the bus tours of the island we stayed on the ferry and took it back to Oban. We had supper at a pub that was not that great.
