Beamish Open Air Museum

This was a great day, the weather was warm and sunny and we really enjoyed the Beamish Air Museum, including the ride on the bus there and my luggage was returned.

Beamish Open Air MuseumWe took a 30 minute bus ride out in the country, which was very scenic to get to the museum. This huge museum is a lot like Heritage Park in Calgary with buildings moved to a central location and set up as a city and farms. It consists of 4 sections: Colliery Village, The Town, Pockerly Manor/Wagonway, and Home Farm with vintage trams and 1910 double decker buses to get between the sites.

Bus between areas

Wagonway
First we went on a very short ride on an 1825 passenger train.

Colliery Village
This is a coal town and includes a school, church, row houses and a mine. I enjoyed how the different houses in the row houses were set up and talking to the people working in them, they also included flower and vegetable gardens. The church was set up like a fall fair. We did not go into the mine

Pockerly Manor
Then walked up the hill to the 1820 manor house past pastures with horses and cows. There was a great view of the fields, train and surrounding area from the formal garden, which has a sundial. The manor is furnished for the period and are lots of people in costume doing things like polishing silver, cooking and weaving

The Town
We had lunch in the tea room of this 1913 town and looked at the many shops-garage, bank, pub, Lodge, etc. There is are row houses with many different businesses e.g. dentist office. I walked over to the train station where you can see the building where the tracks are controlled from and station building, there are no trains running from here. There is an Amusement park with a ferris wheel, carousel and other rides but we did not walk over there.

Home FarmIt was interesting seeing and reading about the different farm implements and methods and to see the animals. Ches enjoyed bugging the geese and getting them excited and honking loudly. The farm house had half the building for animals and the other half for the people.
