York tour

It was warm and sunny and after a nice full English breakfast we walked into town and took a walking tour. A volunteer guide takes you on a tour around the city and gives you lots of history. We went past Kings College, along the city wall, past the Minster, to St. Mary’s abbey, the Shambles and over to a park with the ruins of a church. The Shambles is a colourful old street in half timbered, traffic free, curving and narrow. This was once the “street of the butchers” (the name came from shammell –a butcher’s block). This had wonderful little shops of all kinds and nearby was a flea market. At the end of the walking tour we had some good take out fish and chips and sat in the square and ate them, then went to the flea market. We walked back and rested for the rest of the evening and watched a DVD in our room.
